Supplemental insurance for high deductible

January 1, 2010

Q: I have health coverage through my employment but I have a $2,500 deductible my son has had procedures done in October and December. But as you know the deductible starts again in 2008. Would purchasing a supplemental policy help me in this case when he goes back to the doctor to follow-up on all of the work done, office visits, EKG, etc.?

A: Yes, this is exactly the purpose of supplemental insurance. It protects you from high deductible group plans and other gaps in coverage. Supplemental insurance pays you directly and not the health care provider, so you can control the cash payments. Another advantage of supplemental insurance is that it allows you to maintain eligibility for a Health Savings Account while not being exposed to the risk of the high deductible. The most popular supplemental coverage plans are Basic Health Insurance, Value Med and Core Health Insurance. All are available for immediate online enrollment here at MedSave.com.
