International medical insurance for swine flu

KM | April 30, 2009

Q: Does international medical insurance cover swine flu? Are there any limitations if I travel to Mexico now?

A: International travel medical insurance and trip interruption insurance covers swine flue the same as any other illness. The usual maximum benefit levels and limitations apply as listed in the "Summary of Benefits" on the enrollment page and in the policy.

Note that most international travel insurance policies focus on stabilization and emergency evacuation back to the United Sates (or home country for non-US citizens) rather than providing ongoing treatment at the place you are visiting. Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions is limited accordingly to prevent individuals from traveling to another country for the purpose of obtaining extended medical care.
