How to cancel insurance coverage

TA | May 8, 2007

Q: I need to cancel my insurance coverage.

A: The best way to cancel insurance coverage is to call the member services office. This allows the representative to ask the security questions necessary to confirm your identity and give you an immediate confirmation of the cancellation action. The member service phone number is listed in the policy and on the member ID card. We maintain a list of commonly requested phone numbers at  http://www.medsave.com/contact.htm.

Insurance companies usually do not accept cancellation requests by mail or e-mail because it is difficult to confirm the identity of the person making the request. If you cancel by telephone, keep a record of the transaction confirmation number or the representative's name. If you cancel by mail, use a service with proof of delivery. A few insurance companies require your signature by fax or mail so the member services representative can help with this instruction if necessary. The representative will also be able to confirm, for example, if coverage stops immediately or on the last day of the current month (as stated in each policy and controlled by state law).

No other third party is authorized to accept any request to stop insurance coverage for any insurance company nor to "pass on" a request to stop coverage on your behalf for obvious security reasons.

Cancellation problems are rare but if your coverage is not cancelled as you requested, then you will be asked to provide proof of your request. If you cancel by telephone, keep a record of the transaction confirmation number or the representative's name. If you cancel by mail, use a service with delivery confirmation.
