Health Savings Account to pay insurance premiums
Q: My fiancé is getting health insurance from a provider other than where I work. I would like to use my HSA to pay for her monthly premiums. Is it alright to pay for these premiums before we are married?
A: The only time HSA funds can be used to pay health insurance premiums on a tax-free basis and without a tax penalty is during a qualifying period of unemployment. Marriage is not the controlling issue in this instance. Of course, you may always withdraw HSA funds for any purpose if you intend to pay income taxes and 10% penalty on the withdrawal.
