Coverage for law student

KM | April 2, 2009

Q: My daughter is a law student who bought a 12 month short term medical policy that lasts through September 2009. The premium was pre-paid for the year in order to get a discounted rate. If she takes no classes during June, July and August will she still have coverage?

A: Yes, short term medical insurance continues in force and is not affected a student's enrollment status. Coverage is valid anywhere in the U.S. and counts as "creditable coverage" when she joins a future employer's group health plan. In contrast, many student insurance plans offered through colleges and universities do not offer these features.

Since there will likely be a gap between the expiration of the policy and the next group coverage you may wish to consider enrolling in a second policy in September.
