Core Health Insurance for Scheduled Surgery

JM | April 15, 2008

Q: I have had some medical tests and an now scheduled for surgery. Am I eligible for Core Health Insurance and is this considered a pre-existing medical condition?

A: You are eligible for Core Health Insurance and you do have a pre-existing medical condition. While Core Health Insurance provides liberal coverage of pre-existing medical conditions in comparison with other health insurance plans, this will not make much difference to you over the short term. Benefits limits for pre-existing medical conditions are built into insurance policies to ensure that more premium is collected in the early months of the policy than the cost of benefits paid out due to known medical costs. Otherwise the insurance plan would financially collapse. The value of health insurance is in the benefit it pays over the long run for unanticipated expenses rather than the expenses that are already known.
